Off the Wall series

Performance / Installation. In a recurring nightmare from my childhood, I find myself in a room with no floor, where the walls are indescribable and transparent, both close and far away at the same time. An agonizing feeling of beyond, within and mute. In the discrete privacy of the office landscape I found a method, electronic smartfilm, with a connection. The work is not an attempt to interpret or recreate this memory in an artistic context. Instead it is a step on the way to something else, undefined. On/Off the Wall.

Off the Wall is a series of works with electrical filters on glass surfaces. Filters that can change the glass from transparent to diffuse. A collaboration between the artists Olof Persson and David Sabel.

The work No.4 in the serie is A transparent wall that dividing the room. At given moment the installation turns into a performance set with a trio of dancers. The choreographic framing changes with the wall and it’s programmed flow of on/off. It is a peculiar sensitivity in the window and it leads into a relationship between public and private. A set of individual movement combinations are processed in a socially abstract group structure, influenced by the philosophy that dance is form and that the movement holds meaning in itself. All this is fused with the particular sound works.

Work No.2 – No.3 in the series is A installation with two transparent screens, freely pledged side by side in place, they can play as a couple or each of them separately. Through the screens electronically programmed on/off modes, comprises the image and the sound of variable shifts and changes in transparency. It is a peculiar sensitivity in the window and it leads into a relationship between public and private.

Post-contructions

A series of images and video works. A post-contruction work with video documentation of choreographic movement structures. The works alternate between the recognizable and the near abstract.

Through a consistent use of copying and manipulation in the image processing of bodies in movement, documentation and imagination fuze together. The work has been going on for a longer period and includes seven untitled works on inkjet prints on sheets and HD video on monitors.

2010 – 2016.

Me — every body, in a Billion Worlds

Performance. A selection of sequences from the Me - every body series are modified for the exhibition space. From the total of 15 sequences this selection shows three: no. 10, 14 and 15, from the stage performance Me – every body, volume 2. The audience is given the opportunity to move around, close to the dancers, moving walls and slide boards. At the core of the performance are subtle movement structures, dimmed lights, smoke and pulsating sound.

We are a billion bodies who wander around in an organic throng, like sovereign worlds, consistently colliding with ourselves and others in the jigsaw puzzle of life.

Me — every body, volume 2

Performance. The structure of movement and the body's simple complexity. Six sequences dissect the movement in shape and time for the stage where the body is central for the work. Everything we do, redefine and produce, is occurring directly or indirectly in relationship to the body. Our thoughts, motions, meetings and life in general would not take place if we weren¹t built after the present structure. The basic necessities for the body are still the same, but the awareness of it and methods to support it, are on the other hand in constant detailed change.

Six stand-alone sequences (no. 10–15) performed by seven dancers, who with several sets of movements at their disposal create individual combinations. The group dynamic complicates the structure further. As in Me – every body, volume 1 with its nine sequences (no. 1–9), the work has been an interactive process where sound artists have made (sound) recordings of the movements of the dancers, and worked with the image and motion models from the different sequences. Layer upon layer, the six sequences have been merged together with the especially composed sound works, light and form.

Me — every body, volume 1

Performance. The structure of movement and the body¹s simple complexity. Nine sequences dissect the movement in shape and time for the stage and the exhibition space, where the body is central for the work.

Body. Simple, and yet very complex.

The work has proceeded a long time (2001 - 2008). In turns nine sequences have been created, extended and modified at different locations in the world. Every sequence is built on its own and with its own shape. They are not cohesive in a logical sense, but in the end become an entity through its own complexity.

60 min, variable dimensions, 2001 - 2008.

Give me autonomy and feel free

Video / Installation. -To find oneself in empty space can appear to be lonely, feel like an exile, but it can also be a solitary space for reflection. At the same time an empty space carry every possibility a possibility to expand ones own images, space, movement, thinking and self.  In the work the image structure is consistently limited to rotating movements, in layer on layer with repeated time shifting. Performed in a black box the vertical axis becomes subjective, and a feeling of a dreamy weightless condition appears.

The work mirrors in a physical manner the integrity, individuality and society's roles. It's about the body's relationship to the own inner-self and to other individuals. Networks, root systems, ramifications are built everywhere today and are central for our communication with the surrounding world. Movements are formed inside the individual and expanded out from the own body , where they are interpreted of and webbed together with other individuals. The dancer is the interpreter of movements and the shaper of rooms. She constantly acts with herself and the own body. Here she becomes a model of the creation progress, the making of the network.

16 min in loop, 2004.

Zero°  Oxygen°  Ectascy°

Room / Installation / Performance. A part of the series Fusion°. The for humans, constant procedure; the establishment of a new time in the old, is central for the work. Everything is in constant change -still something of the past is always preserved, earlier experiences and knowledge. no one creates in a vacuum. Culture and trends occurs, growing, withering, lost and leave traces. Remnants of these often return in new forms.

Three invented characters live each of them in a sphere of their own, independent of the passing of time. But at the same time they don't exist without each other. Three performances are shown in an installation, accommodated in three rooms built-up by textiles that are lit from the outside. The audience visit one room after the other -each part is observed on its own.

60 min, 10 x 20 x 3 m, 1999.

Individ° - Remnants of a society

Individ° - In the white light

Video / Installation. A part of the series Fusion°. Issued from same angle as the work Zero° Oxygen° Extas°, but method and form are here different, the possibilities and impossibilities of time. Two individual but close-related video-works communicate with each other from two opposite screens. The spectator ends up in the video-room that appears in between and thus becomes a third part.

In earlier works the video-images have been laid layer on layer. In Individ°, the picture has kept its pure original surface and changed in just 1-2 layers with speed-changes. As a result the movements become fragmented. Some slow motion sequences featuring some prompt motions can oddly enough be perceived as forwards as well as backwards they lack direction in time. The shooting location doesn't exist anymore, it has been demolished. The dance is therefore enacted in a different, historical time period. A civilization past.

12 resp. 5 min in loop, 9 x 9 m, 1999.

Beyond Intra and Mutism

Video / Sculpture / Installation. The first part from a work in progress, based on a recurrent dream from early childhood. In the dream I'm inside a floating room without bottom, with walls that has a surface that words cannot describe, these walls feels so close and yet very far away.

In the image procedure a specific image from a feature film laid the ground for the work: A room with a big mirror, which reflects the room. The images are cut up and brought out, processed with layer of overtones, in and out-zooming, speed-changing. Several rooms and rooms in-between appears, a flow of previously not seen images emerge never to return...

The film material is projected from two sides on a half-transparent plastic cube. The "flat" video gains a three dimensional form the zero gravity, floating room appears. The spectator moves around or inside of the work.

5 min in loop, 2,5 x 2,5 x 2 m, 1998.

Fri Text Zon

Room / Text / Installation. Social functions and values. A work in constant change, The visitor/spectator becomes a part in the production of the installation. She has, in a constructed or available space, the choice to freely print her own texts and/or images.

Words, meanings and images which spontaneously are drawn at the wall sometimes merge together and create new unexpected combinations of words and images. The impression is enhanced by the fluorescent writing. A wave of opinions and expression, socially accepted or taboos, beautiful and ugly float together in the empty space, a kind of present virtual room.

3 x 4,5 x 2,5 m / variable dimensions, 1995.

Anarchism - A chaotic order in the democratic society

Video / Performance. The shapes of organized chaos and the existence. We are overflown by a constant stream of information and news that forces itself into our living rooms.

The two dancers and the actor are on the stage in the centre of this image-storm. The scene-design creates the room by using seven monitors and two projectors. Three edited video films run parallel through-out the performances. Opposite of this flow stands the lit-through image - an alternative, like a world beyond or inside ourselves.

60 min, 9 x 9 x 6 m, 1994.

Stefan Nilson, Nerikes Allehanda.

Magnus Haglund, Göteborgs-Posten.

”Olof Persson is famous for his work on moving images in performances, installations and video. Continuing the project Me - every body, a second volume will soon premiere, with six new sequences presenting new images, formations, sound works and movement structures, all placing the body in the centre.”

IdN World, Hong Kong.

“One way to think of the body is as an architectural structure that houses an entire life. And since our lives are not static, it’s only natural that our bodies should move as well. The body in motion then becomes a performer that tells the story of a person’s life in real time. A series of performances conceived over a period of seven years by Olof Persson explored the relationship between body and movement in space and time.”

Sleek Magazine, 30, Sound | Silence, Berlin.

Projects

Olof Persson Projects

A trans-disciplinary team, based in Göteborg, headed by the artist Olof Persson. With varying contributors, the group’s function is to elaborate artistic ideas and commissions. The long-term work process is an important part of the activity and the basic artistic idea is based on the body and the movement's structure and complexity.

The activity is based in a studio / workshop and at the art center 3:e Våningen (3rd floor). The studio / workshop allows for experimental work in the initial phase of sketching, modelling, calculations, video and image processing. At 3:e Våningen experimental work and production of material and scenography are carried out in the phases of development. Most often this is the venue where the works are premiered.

Performances, installations and video works have been presented at galleries, art centers, museums, stages and festivals around the world: in Paris, New York, Göteborg, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, Santiago de Chile, Malmö, Lisboa and more.

It is important for the process to meet people that can provide the right shape to the ideas. A wide range of collaborations with professionals of various kinds occur: dancers, composers / sound artists /

musicians, photographers, lighting designers, costume designers / fashion designers, architects, graphic designers, writers, technicians and manufacturers in various fields, etc.

Collaborators are: Robin Rimbaud / Scanner (Tate Modern), Helena Fredriksson / H Fredriksson (New York Fashion week), Pierre Proske / Grimus (Ars Electronica Futurelab), Lina Räftegård (The Royal Danish Theatre), Mike Skinner (MoMa PS1) Lisa Alm (Fashion Deluxe), Camilla Blomgren (Aoki), Jean-Louis Huhta (Skull Defekts), Rebecca Evanne (Helsinki City Theatre), Madeleine Strandberg (Göteborg Opera House), Hannes A Brandulv (Göteborg International Film Festival), Karl-Wilhelm Björk (Vivienne Westwood), Nora Takada Wigzell, Lotta Lipsanen, Maria Kivelä, Elisa Locci (Video Monologs), Sara Assbring (El Perro Del Mar), Daniel Högberg and Björn Synneby (Pacific!, Apflickorna), Diana Orving, Nina Andersson (Bon Magazine) and others.

Current work and projects are supported by Göteborg Cultural Affairs, The Arts Grants Committee, Swedish Arts Council, Kulturbryggan, Frispel and Region of West Sweden. The studio is supported by Göteborg Cultural Affairs.
